I was watching Oldboy again last week, made me want dumplings for 10 years. Cerritos girls wanted to go dumpling adventuring. So, Angie tells me about the successful in cold season, Kal Guk Su chain in Korea. It was good. Free noodle refills is the business. I recommend to go with somebody that speaks Korean.
P.S. It was also nice catching up with you girls. =]

My nephew celebrated his 4th bday with a super hero theme and a bouncy castle. Food was great and homemade. I had to leave early to work at Santa Monica that night as well as 2 shoots for my contest. It's still pretty tough finding people interested in portfolio shots, especially if you are not very well established. I just need the right connections at the moment.

Tim's band, The Field Trip, performed at The House of Blues in Downtown Disney. Rolled with PhilxMarie, ate some good gumbo. Sadly I couldn't bring in my DSLR so I missed out. I really wanna buy a point and shoot now.

Before I hit up the Pasadena Haunted Forest last Wed. I stopped by Jeepney Asian Grill to support fellow Gazebo member, Audacity. I used natural light the whole time. I kinda dig the high ISO in night time situations.

First Time for Everything

I've covered numerous events, it's always pretty fun. But last Friday was the first time I actually used a stationary strobe the whole night. I'm used to gorilla podding 2 speedlights at opposite ends of the room as a bare flash, but I decided to go bold that evening. So the majority of the night was taken by off camera flash. I might do this for everything now, if space is not an issue. 2 strobes at opposite ends would be perfect.

The Contest

“My name is Nick Barcelona, I am a photographer and I’d love to photograph you. No charge. Check out my work and email me if you’re interested.”
For those that are unaware...I am in a photo contest to be a contracted photographer for a well known agency ("The Company" for security reasons and I don't want my competition lurking my work). The rules are simple: Demonstrate my lighting techniques, composition, and focus within each photo. I will be photographing women. The tough part is I can'y use any make-up and hair artists, stylists, paid contracted models, etc. Everything must be done on my own. There will be a release form for anyone interested. This is a legitimate contest, and I am not some new kid who picks up a camera just to meet women, I am driven by creativity and my artistic passion for photography. I will provide paperwork as proof for all those who think this is ridiculous. I am unable to show my old work to the officials (because they saw it all), and they are testing me to see if I am worthy to be a photographer for this company. So I am calling out all women interested in a FREE shoot. If you are cute/fit, it is a plus, I'm not trying to be mean, but it is necessary if I want to join the ranks. I will not be posting your images anywhere because it will be for the official's eyes only. (It will also boost up my portfolio). I am looking for at least 50-100 women interested, more is better, so if a group of friends want to shoot I'll make an exception to my rules. I am the youngest out of the 10 competitors. I want to prove to the old cats that I can breakthrough in the company even with the least expensive equipment. Help a brother out, contest ends at end of the year. I am willing to step out of my boundaries and get exposed to various photography levels.

On location shooting is preferred, but studio is also ok. The shoot will typically last for about 1-2 hrs because of all the custom lighting. I just need at least 2 awesome images from each set. You will receive all your images on a disc. There will be a BTS shooter if possible to make sure I am not cheating in this challenge. For those that never modeled, new, or interested.. here are some tips:
- Find ideas you are comfortable with before the shoot. Also, keep in contact with me, it makes it a much more comfortable environment for the photographer and the model
- Come with hair and make-up done and ready to shoot. Don't forget to pack the necessary supplies to make changes.
- Bring several wardrobe options. The more the merrier. Something unique and sexy.
- Eat something before you show up. Don't starve yourself.
- You may bring one person to the shoot. I usually do not allow anybody because I learned from experience that they serve as a distraction to me or the model. I am only allowing one because we are not very well acquainted and the person can carry my stuff. No boyfriends.
- However, if you are a group of women, it would be nice too. This way I can meet the minimum requirement of 50 girls much faster...then shoot for 75.
- Driver's License so I can verify you are over 18.
- Posing is tough. It is achieved by both photographer and model. I can only think of a certain amount on the fly.
- Optional: bring images of some work you like. I will try my best to replicate it to the best of my ability.
- If you know what you are doing I will just shut up and shoot.
- Collaborate ideas and inspire.
- Music or conversation are how my shoots usually go. That awkward silence ruins the mood. I prefer conversations. I can bring beer too if you prefer.
- Flakes. I dislike. I've been getting a lot since this contest started.

My buddy Francis turned 21 yesterday. Known this guy since elementary school. Crazy... Didn't drink as much. Score: 2 French Connections, a shot, JacknCoke, and some vodka drink at Matador. Francis was gone. Decided to shoot with my travel cam. Good times with good company. Nice to meet new faces.
